Down the Mississippi
Beautifully bound and illustrated, this 192 page book was published by
Reader's Digest as part of its Travels & Adventures series. This large (8 1/2"
by 11 1/4") book was edited by Nick Bakalar and the feature writer was Charles
Flowers. The first part, Father of Waters
includes Mississippi River maps and history. Some of the sixteen chapters are
Nature in the Bayou, Mark Twain and Huck Finn, Slavery, and
Floods. The second half of the book is a condensed version of Mississippi
Solo with many photos of the author and locations in the book. It
includes 26 special features including Music of the River, Meet Me in
St. Louis, The Great Steamboat Race, and New Orleans. It was
translated into several languages including French and Finnish.
